This piece is inspired from a picture I took while on vacation in Maine. The scene is of a harbor in Stonington which is located on Deer Isle. If you’ve never been there, I highly recommend it.
I’m keeping this post brief. Thanks for stopping by and have a great day.

This piece is inspired by a picture I took while on vacation in Maine this summer. It’s a scene in Port Clyde that captured the sloping street that leads to the harbor. It’s a very small but bustling town that features a ferry that takes you to Monhegan Island. We were actually just cruising around when we discovered this place and decided to stay a few nights.
It was a wonderful visit and I would recommend it to anyone that loves that rustic coastal living and is off the beaten path. That’s all for now. Have a great Monday.

This is the second painting I did in plein air of this subject. You can see the first one in the previous post. I changed the layout to feature the boats and reflections. Not sure which one I like the best.
Hope you like it. Thanks for stopping by.

I painted this one en plein air yesterday in downtown Newport News, Virginia. For the past week it’s been pretty gray and wet and Sunday we finally had great weather to get outdoors.
The harbor was jammed with boats that were avoiding the storm at sea, so I had many to choose from. I was really captured by the reflections and I decided to give it a go.
That’s all for now. Thanks for stopping by and have a great day.

I took a few pictures about a month ago while I was walking around in Downtown Hampton, Virginia. I discovered this dock that was tucked away behind some taller hotels and shops. I’ll try to get out there soon to do some plein air work. The image has stayed with me and I couldn’t resist giving it a go from my photo.
Thanks for stopping by.

This is an expressive painting of a picture I took while on vacation in Maine this summer. I’m continuing to work with smaller scale paintings and tonal values for larger studio works. This piece and a few others will remain as part of my studies for some larger canvas paintings.
That’s all for now. Have a great weekend.

I’ve been working on my technique quite a bit lately. I’ve tried to refine my work and technique so that I can have more control of the outcome. It’s frustrating when I spend hours in the studio only to have a pile of rejects and tubes of wasted paint. My goal is to have more control and to work methodically, but yet with a sense of knowing where I’m going with the painting. I know that probably sounds like a standard for an artist, but for me it’s a challenge.
I think with my latest works, I learned a lot about tonal values and hard and soft edges. I will start to loosen up and get back to my slinging ways, but with absolute control of my paint and method.
Hope you find it interesting. Thanks for stopping by.

This piece was painted several days ago in Newport News, Virginia. The boat was quite a distance from me and behind a gated boat yard. I loved the scene, so I parked across the street and decided to give it a go.
I added a few elements here and there to give it some interest, but all in all, it’s a nice sketch that I will use later for a canvas painting.
Hope you like it. Have a great Sunday.

This piece was painted yesterday in downtown Newport News, Virginia. I found a new vantage point and was fortunate to have a sunny day to paint these scallop boats. As soon as I saw them it was like they were calling me to break out my easel. I couldn’t resist, so I did.
It’s a different technique than I have used before. I’m tyring to refine my style a bit so that my work has a cohesive look to it. This is more of an impressionistic style and quite frankly, I really enjoyed doing it. I’ll try this piece soon on a larger canvas in the studio.
Hope you find it interesting. Thanks for stopping by.

This is a scene from Portland, Maine. I took a few pics while on vacation this summer so I could do a few reference paintings later on. I must admit that I do enjoy working en plein air much better than doing studio pieces. There’s nothing like having the subject right in front of you. Having said that, the big advantage for me is that when I’m in the studio I can make better decisions about what to include and omit from the painting. I tend to get overwhelmed when I’m on site not really knowing what to include in the painting. I guess you could say there’s an art to that.
With practice I think I’ll become more aware of this when I’m outdoors thus creating more simplistic and better studies for future works.
That’s all for now. A special thanks to all of the followers and collectors who are supporting my art career. Have a great day.
