This is a scene from Portland, Maine. I took a few pics while on vacation this summer so I could do a few reference paintings later on. I must admit that I do enjoy working en plein air much better than doing studio pieces. There’s nothing like having the subject right in front of you. Having said that, the big advantage for me is that when I’m in the studio I can make better decisions about what to include and omit from the painting. I tend to get overwhelmed when I’m on site not really knowing what to include in the painting. I guess you could say there’s an art to that.

With practice I think I’ll become more aware of this when I’m outdoors thus creating more simplistic and better studies for future works.

That’s all for now. A special thanks to all of the followers and collectors who are supporting my art career. Have a great day.

So this is a study painting for a larger acrylic painting that I’m going to start this weekend. It’s a scene I came up with using some reference photos and a bit of imagination.

I used some watercolor washes to start the painting letting the colors drift across the page without any concern for where that ended up. The idea was to come back later with some gouache to help contain the loose colors. I really enjoyed the freedom of this technique and have decided to make my mixed media paintings more of a study process for larger works which is something that I’m very interested in doing. I often paint on a smaller scale and have the desire to bump it up some in the future. Perhaps even moving into some oils.

That’s all for now. Thanks for stopping by and have a great Tuesday.

My goal was to loosen up a bit on this one. My biggest challenge with acrylic on canvas is that I paint too wet and I’m not patient enough to allow layers to dry before I add the next one. I tend to treat them like my watercolors, but I have to step back and remember to wait, wait, wait. I’m just so energized when I’m working that I let the passion come before the techniques. I’ll get it in the long run. Becoming a better artist is always a full time job. I must admit though that I don’t mind clocking in for this one.

Hope you like it. I have a few more similar to this one that I’ll post over the next few days.

This is another salvaged painting from the recycle bin. It was originally a landscape that I lost interest in and decided to paint over. I used a similar palette and technique as yesterday’s post.

This piece was originally a seascape gone bad. Since I’ve been in horse mode for week, or so, I decided to convert this painting by leaving some of the original color and adding some intense yellows and oranges. Once that dried, I added some darks to the body of the horse being sure to go over the edges. Once that dried, I added the lighter tones which really brought the painting together. Until the last stage was complete, it looked like a mess of random strokes that made up nothing more than an abstract painting. I used a palette knife to scratch back some lines that really give this animal some energy and movement.

I finished this painting up this morning. I used some browns and a touch of red to painting the horse. I wasn’t too concerned about the shape of the horse because I knew I would come back with the white to finish the final outline. It was almost like sculpting the the subject with the final layer. I added some darks at the very end and used my palette knife to scratch back some highlights.

I have always enjoyed how a herd of horses will travel together. Sometimes bunched together like race cars at the Daytona 500. Bumping and pushing for position. I’m not sure who’s in the lead here, but they certainly are battling for position.

Thanks for stopping by and have a great Tuesday.

This is another example of a painting that was salvaged with a little help from some gouache. I can still see the under painting which was a plein air landscape gone bad. I also used some acrylic inks to layer over some watercolors. My process involves spreading some random colors and strokes across the page. Once it dries I observe the the painting until I can see an image appear. Once I have the image, I break out the gauche and acrylic inks and start to bring the subject to life.

Horses are subjects that I find fascinating to paint. They have beautiful structure and shapes that I find irresistible. Horses in full stride really appeal to me and blend well with my style. Unlike yesterday’s post this piece was painted on a fresh sheet of paper. It’s really difficult for me to paint on this scale, but every now and again, one will turn out.

Just finished this one up. After three days off from painting I decided to go back to my expressive style using mixed media. I used some reject paintings to create a handful of paintings that I will post over the next few days.

Hope you like it. Thanks for stopping by.
